“The most revelatory three minutes for me was the first time I put on scuba gear and dived on a coral reef. It’s just the unbelievable fact that you can move in three dimensions.”

– David Attenborough

Have you always wanted to know what it’s like to fly? Well scuba diving is about as close as you can get. When you master the skill of breathing underwater you can experience the feeling of being completely weightless.

Not to mention the fact that there are so many incredible things to explore beneath our oceans. From ancient Mayan cenotes to wartime shipwrecks and unbelievable creatures like cuttlefish and mola mola, there is so much to see.

A Discover Scuba Dive is an easy, low commitment way to find out if scuba diving could be for you. You will spend 1.5 hours in a safe pool environment with a trained dive professional where you will be able to learn the basic principles of diving before having a go for yourself.

Perhaps you have been thinking about diving for years, or you’re looking for a new challenge or skill to learn? Maybe you’re looking for a present for the person who has everything, or even a cool activity to do as a family! Well a Discover Scuba Dive could be just what you’re looking for.

Got questions? You might find the answers in the FAQs below, but if you don’t just send me an email or message me on Facebook to talk more about taking your first steps into the world of diving.

Bella Divemaster and Discover Scuba Leader

Hi there! I’m Bella, the owner of Down Under Diving. I’ve been exploring the deep blue for 17 years and have dived all over the world, from the cold waters of New Zealand, to the coral reefs of Egypt.

After doing my Open Water certification here in New Zealand I went on to train in Thailand where I became a Divemaster (as well as doing my wreck, deep, nitrox, oxygen provider, first aid and intro to tech courses). For the last 12 months I have been dry-suit diving in Scotland where I qualified as a DSD leader before returning home.

I’m now based in Masterton, running Discover Scuba Diving experiences to help introduce more people to my passion. If you have ever thought about diving, whether for food, for pleasure, or both…now is the time to try.

More than 70% of the earth is covered in water, that’s a lot of amazing stuff to be missing out on! If you’re ready to discover scuba diving just get in touch.

  • Anyone over the age of 10 can do a Discover Scuba Dive. You just need to have a basic level of physical fitness, so if you’re a sprightly 90-year-old, you can do it too.

  • Every student is required to complete a medical questionnaire to make sure you’re fit to dive. If you answer yes to any of the items on the medical questionnaire that doesn’t preclude you from having a go but you will need a note from your Doctor that they are happy that you are fit to dive.

  • In a word, yes! But I would encourage you to think hard about how severe your phobia is. Can you successfully snorkel? Then you may well be fine, if you can’t, you may find it more challenging. If you really want to try but you’re very nervous, just give me a call and we can talk through concerns and book a one to one session.

  • Yes! You don’t have to be an expert at the butterfly, infact it’s better if you sink! You should be comfortable in the water but you don’t need to be able to swim well.

  • Sunscreen, a bottle of water, a snack, your inhaler if you require it, a towel, a warm layer and a dry change of clothes. Bring a swimming costume, you will not be able to wear street clothes in the pool – all scuba equipment will be provided for you.

  • The total cost for a Discover Scuba Dive is $150 payable by cash or bank transfer. This covers the full cost of your equipment, your air tank fill and a book that you can take away which covers everything you will have learned during your session.

  • No, the Discover Scuba Dive is an experience not a course. It’s purpose is to help you understand the basic principles of diving and have some fun in a safe, controlled environment. Should you wish to continue your diving education you can then do the Open Water course which will allow you to dive independently.

  • You will arrive at the pool where we will collect your paperwork and confirm that there is no medical reason for you not to dive. You will then be fitted for your equipment and receive a full briefing on how it works. Then we will enter the pool where the rest is up to you! We can play games, learn skills, go for a swim or all of the above. This is meant to be a fun experience so it’s all about what you want to get from the session.

  • The maximum number of people in your session will be 4 to make sure there is plenty of time for you to get individual attention and maintain a safe ratio.

If you have any queries please feel free to get in touch via email or Facebook chat. I’ll come back to you asap to answer your questions and organise your session.

If you’re ready to book then please fill out this Booking Form and make sure to provide me with your height, jacket, and shoe size so I can fit you for the correct gear.

Once you have completed the booking form please download and complete the medical statement. If you answer yes to any of the questions this doesn’t preclude you from diving but you will require clearance from your doctor. Please contact me if that is the case I will provide what you need to take to your GP.
